It's All My Mom's Fault.

She's the one who ingrained in my brain so consistently since I could walk the idea that I "must not let the cold air out of the refrigerator!" Now days, when I see anyone stand too long with the fridge door open, I can feel my left eye start to twitch and the adrenaline rush through my body as I work to suppress my ridiculous desire to slam it shut. I say all of this somewhat facetiously...but my OCD in this case has gone through a difficult trial since getting married...

Andrew must walk into the kitchen, open the fridge, stare into the fridge, close the fridge, open the freezer, stare into the freezer, close the freezer and then walk away empty handed a million and a half times a day. Can anyone relate to this? He goes through this routine every restless or dull moment of the day. Honestly, I am baffled by it. I swear Andrew is not starving to death. I mean, we are usually well-stocked! So why is he constantly on the half-hunt for food? I'll mention to Andrew: "nothing in the fridge has changed since the last time you opened it...only five minutes ago!" But he'll just shrug. I don't think he understands this compulsion either. He just understands that if he doesn't complete this task twenty-three more times before the end of the day...he just might drop dead. This is one of those mysteries of the universe that I ponder about sometimes. I didn't exactly grow up with males in the house, so I am uneducated in this area. Let me throw this question out into the cosmic void, and maybe someone can shed some light on it for me: Is this common among the men of the world? Or is my sweetheart an isolated case? Has a discovery been made yet as to the cause of this strange phenomenon? And is there hope for a cure? In the meantime, I'll sit here while my eye twitches. =)

Haaaaaa hahaha!!! Rachel - you are not alone! :) Seth, my husband, does that a million and a half times a day too!!! We've talked about it, he says it's a habit. He's not hungry and he knows (???) nothing has changed in the fridge/cupboards since he just looked in them literally 15 minutes ago. When he's on the phone he paces, and part of his 'pace routine' is looking in the fridge/cupboards. Even the spice/cooking cupboard!! I don't understand it either. . . I'll just watch him and smile, silly boys. Op! Right now - he's on the phone and pacing, and he totally just went for the fridge, but when he looked in the freezer he grabbed a pizza out - I guess he is hungry :)

How are you doing? I hope you're doing well, really! Have a fabulous weekend.

I TOTALLY know what you are talking about. It’s a bored man thing. They THINK they are hungry because they are bored. But they usually aren’t even hungry. It’s pretty funny!

Hmm...I think I do that too. (Does that make me a man?) I`m hungry and keep hoping I`ll find something to put together. It does waste fridge coldness though.

I think we've had a conversation or two before about this, but a swear it's men's compulsive need to snack. Maybe it's that women use their jaw to talk with, and men, to fill the lack of conversation, occupy it by eating. Ethan was actually banned from eating while he studied because he could go through a bag of tortilla chips, a couple bunches of grapes, the rest of the crackers, and whatever else was readily accessible. Just wanted to add my comfort that you (and Andrew) are not alone in this!

I think that it is a totally normal and natural thing to do. Honestly Rachel, I would be worried if I were you if Andrew weren't checking the fridgerator every few minutes. He may just be checking to see if it is running and operating at an efficient temperature.
